What Does Mejibó Mean? The Story Behind Our Name

At Mejibó, every ingredient has a story, every dish has a purpose, and even our name carries deep meaning.

Many guests ask us, "What does Mejibó mean?"

The answer takes us back to the roots of Baja California Sur and the people who first called this land home.

A Word from the Cochimí People

Mejibó comes from the Cochimí language, spoken by one of the indigenous peoples of the Baja California Peninsula. More than a place or a season, Mejibó represents a time of joy, abundance, and gratitude—a period when nature offers its greatest gifts.

Traditionally, Mejibó refers to the season of the pitahaya harvest, which takes place from June through August. During these months, the desert transforms. The iconic pitahaya cactus produces its vibrant fruit, signaling a time of celebration, nourishment, and connection to the land.

For the Cochimí people, this was one of the happiest and most abundant times of the year.

The Spirit of Mejibó

When Chef José chose the name Mejibó, he wanted it to represent more than a restaurant.

He wanted it to reflect everything he love about Baja.

The freshness of local ingredients. The generosity of sharing a meal. The beauty of the desert meeting the sea. The joy of gathering around a table with family and friends.

That spirit of abundance is something we strive to bring into every experience, whether you're joining us for breakfast in our garden, enjoying fresh seafood for lunch, or sharing dinner under the stars in Todos Santos.

Inspired by Nature

Nature plays an important role in everything we do.

Through our sustainability efforts, waste separation programs, and the development of our biodynamic garden, we are constantly looking for ways to honor the land that provides so much to our community.

Our garden continues to grow with seasonal vegetables, herbs, and ingredients that help connect our kitchen directly to the rhythms of Baja.

Just as the pitahaya season reminds us of nature's generosity, we believe good food begins with respect for the environment and the people who cultivate it.

A Celebration on Every Plate

For us, Mejibó is not just a name on a sign.

It is a philosophy.

It is freshness.
It is generosity.
It is hospitality.
It is the vibrant spirit of Baja California Sur.

Every plate that leaves our kitchen is inspired by that idea: celebrating the abundance that surrounds us and sharing it with every guest who walks through our doors.

Whether you're visiting Todos Santos for the first time or returning as a friend, we invite you to experience the meaning of Mejibó for yourself.

A place where nature, culture, and community come together around the table.
